Types of Dental Emergencies We See in Kids

There are several types of dental emergencies that we commonly see in kids, including toothaches, broken or chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the tongue or lips. These emergencies can be caused by a variety of factors, such as accidents, sports injuries, or tooth decay.

Most pediatric dental emergencies are due to accidents like playing on a trampoline, getting hit at a soccer or baseball game, or just slipping next to the pool. In fact, most children’s dental emergencies happen during the summer months while people are enjoying the nice weather outdoors!

What to do if Your Child is in Pain

If your child is experiencing dental pain or discomfort, there are some things you can do to help them feel better before you make it to our office. However, delaying treatment can lead to further complications and more extensive treatment in the future. Use these methods for interim relief but schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

First, administer an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Motrin or Tylenol, as directed. Second, apply a cold compress to the side of their mouth (up to 20 minutes at a time) to alleviate the swelling.

If your child’s tooth is broken or chipped, locate the missing fragment and place it in a container filled with milk, then bring it to our office.
