Common Types of Dental Extractions

There are three common types of dental extractions that may be necessary for your child: emergency extractions, therapeutic tooth removal, and orthodontic extractions.

Emergency extractions are typically performed when a tooth is severely decayed or damaged beyond repair, causing pain or risking infection. In most cases, these teeth are non-restorable.

Therapeutic extractions are recommended when teeth are asymptomatic but are severely infected and beyond repair.

Orthodontic extractions, on the other hand, are often performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to create more space in the mouth and properly align the teeth. These types of extractions are less common, but some specialists still require them to correct a child’s bite alignment.

Should My Child Have Their Tooth Extracted?

When it comes to extracting vs. preserving your child's teeth, it's important to weigh the pros and cons of both options. While preserving your child's natural teeth is usually the ideal solution, there are situations where dental extractions may be necessary for their overall oral health. Otherwise, Dr. Petr Vaughan will want to preserve the natural tooth to promote healthy tooth spacing and jaw growth. He will take an X-ray of the tooth to fully assess the situation and provide insight based on what we see.
